Quick summary
- ChatGPT ranking starts with solid SEO
- Keeping your content fresh (max 12 months old) keeps your brand relevant for AI searches.
- Maybe most importantly: Build quality links and boost user-generated content + reviews
Here is a quick checklist of how to rank in ChatGPT and get your website visible. I’m Karsten Madsen, CEO at Morningscore – an SEO tool we have been building in Odense since 2018. Our own visibility is growing fast by taking the medicine below 📈
🔍️ 1. SEO is the foundation for ChatGPT ranking
- Keep doing SEO. It’s the most important thing. Ranking with SEO = ranking in ChatGPT.
- Ranking on both money keywords and research keywords is super important for getting ChatGPT visibility.
- Link building matters. A Linkscore of 1000 is the minimum I would recommend (free check).
- Content: Covering your industry and your expertise as uniquely and deeply as possible boosts both Google and ChatGPT visibility. See next item on the list:
Neil Patel puts it well: AI search is moving away from keyword stuffing and toward authoritative, valuable content. That is exactly why solid SEO and real expertise still win here.
📑 2. Produce very specific content
- Your content should match a very specific prompt like “Who can deliver stone oven pizza after 22:00 in Berlin?”
- Include facts and external links in your content to verify the claim. In the case above, it could be adding links to the Contact or Google Business page showing opening hours.
- The challenge: You want to be specific but still broad enough that you think people would search for it.
The upside is real. The Search Initiative reported a 2300% increase in AI search traffic after tailoring content to match specific user prompts. Specific beats broad every time.
▶️ 3. Use YouTube videos to rank in ChatGPT
- ChatGPT very often looks for YouTube videos to answer questions.
- If your video title and description match a very specific prompt like “List of the best authentic Italian pizza restaurants in Boston in 2025,” it will rank.
- It does not even need many views or likes for that to happen, according to SEO expert Julian Goldie.
📅 4. Keep your content fresh (update it)
- We update our own content yearly. All important articles and pages that generate traffic get an overhaul every year. This helps with rankings on Google and ChatGPT.
- Consider changing the publish date if you have changed the content a lot. This boosts it even more.
💬 5. Boost user-generated content (UGC)
- Maybe some people already talk about your company on platforms like Reddit or Quora. Following a tactical Reddit SEO guide or using Quora for authority helps you engage in those conversations and add facts.
- But often people do not talk about your company if you have a smaller brand. Then you can boost. See this 1 min YouTube video guide for Reddit as an example.
✍️ 6. Do brand building (digital PR)
- Doing press releases and working with local journalists to get your story out is great for both Google and ChatGPT rankings.
- Modern experts now highlight how digital PR and social search work together for discoverability.
- Posting on social media like LinkedIn and Instagram can also help. But I am currently unsure how much it boosts ChatGPT.
Trust and credibility signals carry more weight than ever in AI search. The Digital Marketing Institute confirms that authority and content quality are now central to visibility in AI-driven environments.
🔗 7. Methods for ChatGPT ranking and link building
- All legit and authentic link building is amazing for ChatGPT ranking. But there are some links that are especially strong.

If you want to measure where you actually stand, we built a dedicated ChatGPT rank tracker for exactly that. Our LLM optimization page also goes deeper into the topic if you want more.
This sums up the most important aspects of ChatGPT ranking. The format was compact, so I apologize if something is unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a website actually rank #1 in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT does not rank websites in the traditional sense like Google does. Instead, it acts as an answer engine that pulls from its training data and cites sources based on relevance and confidence. So while you cannot hold a strict #1 spot, providing highly relevant answers increases the chance your brand gets cited. High traditional search rankings can help, but there is no direct ranking mechanism inside ChatGPT itself.
Does AI search optimization replace traditional SEO?
No, it actually complements traditional SEO. Having solid SEO is the absolute foundation for getting noticed by AI models. Tricking the AI with keyword stuffing will not work out well. You still need clear, structured content that directly answers user intent, just as Microsoft points out about getting included in AI search answers.
How long does it take to see results from a ChatGPT ranking checklist?
Getting visible in AI platforms is not an overnight fix. Results can typically be observed within 6 to 12 months of consistent effort. Regularly updating your content, adding structured data, and engaging in digital PR will help accelerate these visibility gains over time.
What types of links influence AI visibility?
Standard backlinks are still great, but AI models increasingly care about structured citations and plain brand mentions. Models like ChatGPT look closely at entity signals and trusted context to verify facts. You can check our 8 free essential links PDF to get started with building the right trust signals for AI.
Does ChatGPT index websites in real time?
Not exactly. AI models are trained on massive datasets and process your content into embeddings rather than crawling it live like old search engines. They rely on pre-training data and periodic updates to understand the web. This is exactly why keeping your key pages updated yearly is so important to stay relevant.
