Free link inspiration: How to get backlinks from brand mentions

A great way to get good backlinks from authoritative websites is through brand mentions. Your company has probably been mentioned in various contexts, such as newspaper articles, collaborations, webinars, and blog posts. The list can be long! You might as well utilise these mentions to get a strong backlink.

While it’s positive to have your business, shop, or brand mentioned online, you can get even more out of it. That’s because the post may not link to your website—in other words, you may not have received a backlink from the site.

Firstly, it would be a valuable backlink because a well-written post is considered good and original content. It would also provide a great opportunity for readers of the article or post to easily and quickly access your website.

See where your brand is mentioned

When you search on Google, you are presented with the results that Google considers most relevant to your search. Many factors influence this judgment! Actively working to improve your ranking in search results is called Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

Since you want to find out where your brand is mentioned on Google. You need to filter out all the places where you already know you are mentioned a lot. This could include your own website, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc. So, refine your search to exclude these pages and focus on new mentions.

We will use our own website as a starting point.

The value of brand mentions in SEO

An important element of backlinks is that the website is credible and authoritative. Some of the best ones are online newspapers or listicles. This is because they are widely read, have a lot of credibility and authority. At the same time, content from a newspaper, for example, is usually high-quality content. They can therefore be expensive to pay for. So, it would be ideal if you could get them for free.

This is because the content is original, well-written, and relevant to the reader. The overall purpose of the text is not to sell—like much of the content on the internet—but to inform and share information. Therefore, the writer has higher standards for the content of the newspaper. In the context of a backlink, this is positive for you.

Google evaluates the content of all landing pages and assigns them a ranking—also called PageRank. If your backlinks come from a page with a higher PageRank, it tells Google that your page has credibility, which is beneficial for you.

Brand mentions are also valuable, as they show Google that you exist. If you’re mentioned in a listicle or newspaper article, it signals to Google that you’re a serious business, have a real product, and are worth keeping an eye on.
