Free link inspiration: How to get backlinks from listicles

A great way to get new backlinks is from listicles. Listicles are really effective because they act as recommendations, and they are something people search for. They are, therefore, an extremely effective way to get relevant and credible backlinks.

Listicles are articles or blog posts structured as a list of different topics. For example, it could be “10 Best Restaurants” or “Good Hairdressers in London.” It can also be more topic-oriented, such as “Tips to Avoid Dandruff” or “9 Ways to Save Money.” At Morningscore, we have created our own listicle of the 20 SEO tools in 2025. There are lots of creative lists on the web.

If you can find your way onto some of the listicles related to your field, it’s not only a powerful backlink, but also an extremely effective way to be considered by new customers—and to stay top of mind with the readers.

If readers are interested in such lists, it’s because they are in an information-seeking phase. They are open to new alternatives or new knowledge in the area. This gives you a golden opportunity to be mentioned at a relevant time when the reader is looking for information about your industry.

How do you find listicles?

Here, as so often, Google will be your best friend. In the following guide, we start with ourselves and SEO tools.

1. Go to Google and search for something relevant to your topic – e.g., ‘best SEO tools’ or ‘best Danish SEO tools’.

There will be lots of information and listicles about the best SEO tools. Many of these will be blog posts from competing companies who want to draw attention to themselves, also known as content marketing. These companies may not want to link to you because you are a competitor.

There will also be other companies or SEO enthusiasts posting, either as sponsored content or as a genuine list of recommendations.

  1. Go to the listicles, read the different lists, and find the ones that are most relevant to you and your business.

For example, we got a link from Bloggingwizard.com, which has Morningscore on their list.

  1. Contact the owner of the listicle.

Once you have found a relevant and up-to-date list, contact the list owner. You can ask them if they know about your product, what is required to be added to the list, or something else.

Note: If possible, it’s best to contact them by phone, as it’s more personal and shows that you’re not a robot. The worst thing that can happen is that they say “no.”

There’s no guarantee that you’ll get on the lists, as it’s 100% up to the blog owner to decide who to include. Many listicles are also paid for—whether you like it or not—so you may have to pay to be included.

You may want to consider paying to be included in the list, as it’s something that can add real value for you. It can be a very effective way of being considered by potential customers when they are looking for information on the subject. Therefore, this aspect should also be considered in relation to listings, as it is more than just a strong backlink.

Find relevant listicles

The internet is full of all sorts of articles and lists that are not relevant to you in any way. You need to be critical of irrelevant lists and investigate which ones are relevant to you. You need to make sure that:

  • The list is relevant to your product. You should not be on a “best running shoes” list if you sell wedding shoes.
  • The list is geographically relevant. If the list is for a specific city or country, then, of course, you should cover that market.
  • The list is relevant to your brand. You shouldn’t be on a list for “Best earrings under  $30” if you sell luxury earrings for $150.

You should therefore be critical about which lists you want to join. It can be very valuable for your business if you get on the right lists—and then you’ll get more than just a good backlink.
